As one of the oldest cities in the world, the city of Jerusalem has seen its share of conflict and struggle. One of the most violent episodes in this history was the era of the Crusades. In 1099, an army of Christian Europeans took the city by storm, establishing the Kingdom of Jerusalem. For eighty-eight years the Crusader Families ruled the city, until the Muslim armies of Saladin retook the city. But holding the city was not the end of the struggle for the powerful nobles who created the Kingdom. Internal power struggles, intrigue, even civil war boiled within the city, even as the armies of Islam slowly gathered strength on the outside. The goal of the Crusader Families was always the same: power and prestige.

In the game Jerusalem, you assume the role of a Crusader baron. Your goal is the ultimate control of the city. You will use your resources to take control of various sectors of the city, using your position to secure more prestige and power. After five years, will you claim the kingship? Or will you struggle beneath the shadow of your opposition?

Things may seem simple, if controlling areas and building towers were you only concern. But the Kingdom of Jerusalem is not an island. There are forces beyond your control that will undermine your carefully laid plans. Three different events will occur during the game. Perhaps a new King will be crowned. Or the Saracens may invade. Either way, you will need to overcome these events if you hope to overcome the other Barons.

Jerusalem combines a number of the most popular game mechanics: bidding for offices, area control, hidden resources, even events beyond the players’ control. Those who hope to rule in the Holy City will need to master all of these varied concerns, or see their ambitions swept into the dustbin of history!
